This past Wednesday the Veterans Assistance Commission met to talk about important issues that are impacting us around the county. This was my first meeting as the county board representative to the commission and the biggest take away I had was the generosity and giving of veterans. We give so much more than we take and to be in a room full of men and women who exemplify the core values of the US Military was so humbling… and cherished.
The main speaker of the evening was Dr. Stephen R. Holt, Director of the James A. Lovell Federal Healthcare Center. Director Holt spent a good 45 minutes answering questions and talking about how healthcare can be better delivered to veterans. One way this can happen is by using a service called My HealtheVet. You can sign up for the service online by clicking here.
The actual website address is: https://www.myhealth.va.gov/index.html
I had not used this service before and one of the big questions was, “how easy is it to sign up?” While Dr. Holt talked about the service I accessed the website and actually signed up in under 10 minutes. What was shocking was it had all of my data in the system once I registered. I was able to refill one of my prescriptions while Dr. Holt talked about making it easier for veterans to get the medicines and care they need. It is my hope that more veterans start using this service and also help to get the word out.
We must remember that not all veterans have access to the internet or may not want to use this service because they feel overwhelmed with the technology. We need to make a conscious effort to help these individuals. If your or a veteran you know needs help please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be more than happy to spend the 10 minutes it takes to get a fellow warrior signed up with this service.
